ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the validity of Achilles Tendon Total Rupture Score (ATRS) for rehabilitation after Achilles tendon rupture. Methods:From January, 2012 to December, 2016, 50 patients with acute Achilles tendon rupture were enrolled. The original table of ATRS was translated, organized and evaluated to obtain the ATRS consensus version. At the 1st month, 2nd month, 3rd month, 6th month and 12th month follow-up, the scores of American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Ankle-hindfoot scale (AOFAS-AH) and ATRS were recorded. Results:Three patients were dropped out. The scores of both AOFAS-AH and ATRS increased with time, and gradually became flat. The total score of AOFAS-AH was significantly positively correlated with the total score of ATRS (ρ = 0.961, P < 0.001). Conclusion:ATRS can be used in evaluating the functional recovery of Achilles tendon repair.

ABSTRACT

Objective To discuss the application value of diatom examination in lung tissue for the forensic diagnosis of drowning. Methods The experimental animals were divided randomly into drowning, postmortem submergence and dying on land group. Diatoms in lung tissue and drowning fluid were analyzed quantitatively by microwave digestion-vacuum filtration-automated scanning electron microscopy diatom examination method. The ratios of content of diatoms in lung tissue and drowning fluid (CL/CD ratio) were recorded. Results The CL/CD ratios of experimental rabbits in the drowning group (5.82±3.50) were much higher than that of postmortem submergence group (0.47±0.35); the CL/CD ratios of different parts of the lung lobes of experimental pigs in the drowning group were higher than that of postmortem submergence group (P<0.05); in seawater, brackish water, river fresh water and lake fresh water, the CL/CD ratios of experimental pigs in the drowning group were higher than that of postmortem submergence group (P<0.05). In animal experiments, all the cases with CL/CD ratio >1.6 were from drowning group. Conclusion CL/CD ratio is an indicator with good application prospects in the diagnosis of drowning.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo establish a method for amplifying specific 16S rDNA fragment of algae related with drowning and test its value in drowning diagnosis.

METHODSThirty-five rabbits were randomly divided into 3 the drowning group (n=15), postmortem water immersion group (n=15, subjected to air embolism before seawater immersion), and control group(n=5, with air embolism only). Twenty samples of the liver tissues from human corpses found in water were also used, including 14 diatom-positive and 6 diatom-negative samples identified by microwave digestion-vacuum filtration-automated scanning electron microscopy (MD-VF-Auto SEM). Seven known species of algae served as the control algae (Melosira sp, Nitzschia sp, Synedra sp, Navicula sp, Microcystis sp, Cyclotella meneghiniana, and Chlorella sp). The total DNA was extracted from the tissues and algae to amplify the specific fragment of algae followed by 8% polyacrylamide gelelectrophoresis and sliver-staining.

RESULTSIn the drowning group, algae was detected in the lungs (100%), liver (86%), and kidney (86%); algae was detected in the lungs in 2 rabbits in the postmortem group (13%) and none in the control group. The positivity rates of algae were significantly higher in the drowning group than in the postmortem group (P<0.05). Of the 20 tissue samples from human corps found in water, 15 were found positive for algae, including sample that had been identified as diatom-negative by MD-VF-Auto SEM. All the 7 control algae samples yielded positive results in PCR.

CONCLUSIONSThe PCR-based method has a high sensitivity in algae detection for drowning diagnosis and allows simultaneous detection of multiple algae species related with drowning.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the clinical efficacy of self-formulated Xingchang Decoction (XCD) in treating slow-transit constipation (STC) and the dynamical parameters of colonic motility during XCD treatment.

METHODSOne hundred and eighteen patients with STC were randomly assigned to the treatment group and the control group, 59 in each group. The treatment group was treated with XCD, and the control group was treated with mosapride, an intestinal energetic agent. The therapeutic course for both groups was 30 days. The 72-h colonic transition test was conducted and the symptom scores were observed before and after treatment; the adverse reaction rate and clinical efficacy were calculated after treatment; and the recurrence rate in one year was followed-up.

RESULTSSymptom scores were significantly improved in the treatment group after treatment, with the improvement significantly superior to that in the control group (P < 0.01). The cure rate and the total effective rate were 76.27% and 93.22% in the treatment group respectively, while they were 47.45% and 72.87% in the control group, showing significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.01). Besides, the 1-year recurrence rate was significantly lower (chi2 = 10.40, P = 0.001) and the improvement of colonic motor function was more in the treatment group than those in the control group (P < 0.01). Only low incidence (5.08% in the treatment group and 8.47% in the control group) of mild gastrointestinal reactions was shown, which caused no influence on the treatment.

CONCLUSIONXCD could effectively improve the motility of the digestive tract, and it is effective and safe for the treatment of STC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To detect the expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF) in the brain and spinal cord of chronic non-remitting model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis(EAE) mouse, and to discuss their effect on EAE/MS.@*METHODS@#Seventy-two female SPF C57BL/6J mice, aged 6k8 weeks, were randomly divided into an EAE group, a blank group, and an adjuvant group. The mice were immuned by mMOG35-55 and CFA. Immunohistochemic technique was used to detect the expression of MIF in the brain and spinal cord.@*RESULTS@#In the EAE group, we observed up-regulation of MIF of central nervous system(CNS) at onset, peak and chronic phase. During each phase, the difference of MIF between the EAE group and each of the other 2 groups was significant (P<0.05). In the EAE group, the expression of MIF was the highest at the peak, which was different from other periods (P<0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#MIF significanty expressed during the procedure of EAE disease, and may be related with the onset and exacerbation of EAE.
